Twin Girls Welcomed in a Household Full of Boys

Friday, June 17th, 2011

An ultrasound confirmed that our patient, Ana , is pregnant with twin girls. This is such exciting news because Ana and her husband already have 3 boys at home. They desperately wanted girls to “balance out” the family.

Joan (Registered Nurse Practitioner) and Ana holding ultrasound of twin girls

Due to an accident years back, Ana and her husband were not able to get pregnant naturally. They sought help from Dr. David Diaz at West Coast Fertility Centers and through IVF, they had twin boys. Spontaneously, Ana was pregnant with another boy and thought her fate was mothering a brood of only boys.

As time elapsed and the boys are a little older, Ana and her husband visited Dr. Diaz again because they wanted to have a daughter. Through the process of Gender Selection performed at West Coast Fertility’s accredited laboratories, an embryo biopsy technique called PGD can determine the “XX” (female) or “XY” (male) gender of any embryo with 99% certainty.

PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) is also very useful for diagnosing embryos that carry chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome or sex-linked genetic diseases.

Congratulations to Ana and her family! We all look forward to meeting your twin girls.

Is the Lower Cost Low-Stim IVF™ Right for You?

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

A candidate for Low-Stim IVF™ at West Coast Fertility Centers will have…

–          Reduction of treatment costs

–          Less drugs and less injections

–          More comfortable stimulation

A primary objective in Low-Stim IVF™ is to allow the ovaries to carry out a more “natural selection” of the most responsive and best quality follicles and eggs. Therefore, the recommended medication dosage is based on patient screening and may be considerably less than traditional IVF. This results in lower medication cost, fewer office visits and less risk of ovarian hyperstimulation.

The purpose of the medications used for any IVF treatment is to induce the growth of multiple eggs in preparation for egg retrieval. The novel Low-Stim IVF™ approach, first developed by Dr. David Diaz during his training at Harvard Medical School, is now recommended for selected patients at West Caost Fertility Centers. The premise for Low-Stim IVF is based on the principle of ovarian reserve which can vary from one person to another.

The concept of ovarian reserve is determined for each patient by documenting the following:
1) Ovarian Volume measured in cubic centimeters
2) Resting Follicle Count obtained by vaginal ultrasound
3) Baseline Hormone Levels measured in the blood

The patient’s age and general medical health are also part of the determining criteria for Low- Stim IVF™.

Our Low- Stim IVF™ treatment has resulted in pregnancy success rates (60%) that are equal to the results obtained with regular medication dose used in standard IVF cycles, states Joan Moody, Nursing Director at West Coast Fertility Centers in Fountain Valley and Fullerton, California.

61 Year Old Surrogate Mother Who Gave Birth to Her Own Grandson—As Seen on Oprah

After 25 successful years, Ms. Oprah Winfrey hosted her finale show on May 25th. Over the years, she has inspired us and shared with us so many interesting life stories. This is definitely one of them! Read and watch the video of the incredible surrogate grandmother.

Read the testimonial of a daughter who was the surrogate for her mother…

I was a surrogate for my parents. My overall experience with Dr. Diaz and staff was a pleasant one. They did all they could to make this process as easy and comfortable for me. I have never done this before and I have to admit I was extremely scared, but for my parents, I would have done this 100 times.

What helped me be at ease was the personable service and the way I was treated while undergoing the procedures and visits. I would and have highly recommended Dr. Diaz for IVF treatments and without the help of Dr. Diaz and staff, there would no greater gift than my little brother. Thank you all again!”    ~Vanessa G.

Tax Credit Bill for Infertility Treatments Introduced in the U.S. Senate

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

A bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate that would provide eligible taxpayers a tax credit for the out-of-pocket expenses related to IVF and treatments to preserve fertility for cancer patients. A warm thank you goes to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) who introduced the bill which is appropriately named the Family Act of 2011, S965.

This was made possible by a successful advocacy day in Washington DC on May 5th put forth by RESOLVE. Now that the bill is introduced, your help is needed by contacting your 2 U.S. Senators to get co-sponsors in the US Senate. It takes 3 minutes through RESOLVE’s Action Alert System. PLEASE review the online letter and personalize it with your story.

Ask your friends and family to send letters  too!  Forward this link so they can take action today. http://www.resolve.org/taxcredit

Introducing Our NEW Spanish and Vietnamese Infertility Website at West Coast Fertility Centers

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Being located in such a diverse community in Southern California, West Coast Fertility Centers felt the importance of bringing forth the explanations and facts of infertility treatments to our valued Spanish and Vietnamese patients in their own languages.

Unlike the automatic language translation services available, we never felt comfortable with the ability and correctness of their translation and, therefore, we wrote our own content for the satisfaction of our patients.

We have treated patients from around the globe and the dignity of every person who seeks our help is respected regardless of background or partnership status. Dr. David Diaz is fluent in English, Spanish and French and our Embryologist is also fluent in Vietnamese.

Royal Wedding Prompts a Visit to West Coast Fertility from a Special British Couple

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The upcoming royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has captivated the world and thanks to their nuptial vows, it has also prompted a visit to West Coast Fertility Centers from a special British couple.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Wedding(Window display of Prince William and Kate Middleton at world famous Harrods department store in London)

It started when Gladys attended the on-board welcome cocktail reception as her cruise ship departed from Seattle. Attracted to Gladys at the party, a charming gentleman introduced himself. Unaccustomed to his distinctive British accent, Gladys asked her travel buddy to help understand the nuances of the “king’s English.” The couple eventually married and began their trans-Atlantic life, he living in Britain and she in the U.S.

Although Gladys had children, the couple relished starting a family together but medical tests showed their best chance would be with the help of a fertility specialist. They visited doctors in the U.K. but the couple decided to seek help in “The States.” A friend recommended they visit a clinic in California where they met Dr. David Diaz.  At the clinic, a prompt diagnosis was made and treatment was planned around the couple’s special living arrangements. His semen sample was frozen and stored before work obligations beckoned in England.

Using in-vitro fertilization, the eggs were fertilized with the thawed sperm and healthy embryos developed in five days. To prevent multiple births, the clinic’s protocol is to transfer just two blastocysts. Happily, two weeks later, a positive pregnancy led to tears of joy and hugs all around. The proud Dad shared in the celebration as the image of the embryo was instantly e-mailed to him across the world in the U.K.

While the Royals prepared for their special day, the British government declared a special holiday of two 4-day weekends in honor of The Prince and future Princess. The celebration made it possible for the new parents to visit California where they hosted a wonderful luncheon for the Staff at West Coast Fertility Centers. They surprised the staff with gifts from England – Cadbury chocolate and a pair of commemorative goblets featuring the images of William and Kate. Congratulations to both couples on their memorable occasions!!

National Infertility Awareness Week April 24-30 | “Secret Stigma of Infertility”

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

This is National Infertility Awareness Week® April 24-30

West Coast Fertility Centers is definitely on the bandwagon to support and educate the public about so many courageous people who struggle with infertility. Please read the following warm message from the Founder and Medical Director of West Coast Fertility Centers—David Diaz, MD, FACOG

“The Secret Stigma of Infertility”

Women and men struggling with infertility are surrounded in daily life by physical, emotional and social stressors which are difficult to avoid. The “Secret Stigma” of infertility is compounded by the feelings of isolation and helplessness mixed with guilt and a healthy dose of anxiety.  The reluctance to share such turmoil with even close friends and family is founded on the underlying dread of mythical advice and fear of caustic comments from well-wishers. The medial insurance industry has further trivialized the impact of infertility by categorizing its treatment as “elective” deluding itself to believe anyone would “elect” to be sub-fertile.

After practicing the “secret specialty” of fertility for 22 years, the dreams of aspiring parents continue to drive my goal to help any person who wishes to have a child by providing alternative options they may not have considered. Advances in medical treatments and society’s evolving attitudes toward non-traditional families are embraced at West Coast Fertility Centers.

Easter Wishes | Meet the Adorable Dewhurst Triplets

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Bunnies Hopping and Babies Popping! Here’s wishing you and your family a very Happy Easter from David Diaz, MD and the entire West Coast Fertility Team

Meet the Dewhurst Triplets

We so admire the adorable pictures of the Dewhurst triplets and we thought their cuteness and outfits were so fitting for our Easter story. Seeing their lovely faces made us smile immediately. Our wonderful patients—Francine and Jonathan Dewhurst share their journey and beautiful family with all of us.

Introducing…

Taryn Chase (4 lbs, 9 oz)

Asher Spencer 5 lbs, 11 o z)

Kathryn Samantha (5 lbs, 7 oz)

We first met Francine and Jonathan in 2005. IUI attempts were unsuccessful and in 2007, IVF was performed. Francine was pregnant and gave birth to a healthy boy, Elias William Roger. They wanted to expand their family and after the second round of IVF, they were pregnant with triplets. The triplets, one boy and two girls, were excited to enter the world and arrived six weeks early on December 30, 2010.

Given the early arrival of the triplets, precautionary measures were taken by limiting visitation from family/friends. This Easter weekend will be especially cherished as it is the first, big family gathering since the triplets were born. There are definitely lots to celebrate as the triplets will turn 4 months on April 30th.

Francine describes that the strategy to taking care of triplets is to “tend to the loudest one first.” She breastfeeds all the children making sure they are all healthy and happy.

Elias, the 3 year old older brother is “in love” with the babies and he is the “best little helper,” states Francine.

Congratulations to your adorable family and we wish the Dewhurst family a very happy Easter family gathering!
