Egg Freezing Ban Lifted, Reproductive Freedom at Last!

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine removed the “experimental” label from human egg freezing. View Press Release

Frozen Egg Bank, Inc. (FEB)is the premiere facility in the United States dedicated to the freezing and distribution of donor eggs and electively freezing the eggs of women wishing to preserve their fertility.  A study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine meeting on October 24, 2012 showed the freezing and thawing technique used by FEB,  a division of West Coast Fertility Centers, has a greater efficiency than the vitrification technique among all egg banks sampled in the study.

– 1 in 5 women are having their first child after age 35. Some women request elective egg freezing to preserve fertility while their eggs are healthy and robust.

– Women diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction or failed fertility treatments can request using frozen donor eggs to help improve their odds for pregnancy.

– Women newly diagnosed with cancer can freeze their eggs before chemo and radiation treatments.

– Some women prefer to freeze surplus eggs instead of embryos for ethical reasons.

October Celebrations with Egg Freezing Doctor David G. Diaz | ‘Experimental’ Label Lifted from Egg Freezing by ASRM

Friday, October 26th, 2012

There are many noteworthy celebrations in the month of October for Dr. David Diaz and the scientists at West Coast Fertility Centers (WCFC).

1) Cadyn Elizabeth was the first frozen egg baby born at WCFC on October 6, 2005 using eggs frozen back in 2001. She turned 7 years old – Happy Birthday to our sweet Cadyn!  This video link was created for Cadyn Elizabeth when she visited us at WCFC in 2010 when she turned 5 years old.

Raise Awareness for Egg Freezing During October National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. West Coast Fertility Centers in affiliation with Frozen Egg Bank, Inc. encourage all young breast cancer patients who want to have children in the future discuss fertility preservation by egg freezing with their oncologists.

It is important to select a Center who has experience with egg freezing and thawing with live baby births from frozen eggs. The advanced LANDA Technology developed by Dr. David Diaz and Antoine La has yielded nearly 70 live baby births from egg freezing. While many fertility centers may offer egg freezing, they don’t necessarily have any live baby births to prove that they can freeze your eggs successfully to produce a baby in the future.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, aside from skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States. (source: www.nbcam.org)

The gonadotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs are known to potentially lead to infertility due to chromosomal effects in the oocyte (eggs). By harvesting and freezing before the start of cancer treatment, the unfertilized oocytes can be stored indefinitely and thawed when clearance is given to attempt pregnancy. This is especially important in young, single females interested in having their own biologic child.

West Coast Fertility Centers helps by reducing some of the costs of egg freezing while working closely with Fertile Hope, a non-profit organization that offers emotional support to cancer patients. Our industry partner, EMD Serono, provides free medications t our patients. This helps make egg freezing more affordable to these patients whose medical treatments may pose a risk of infertility.

Dr. David Diaz is Hosting the World’s First Reunion of Nearly 70 Babies Born from Egg Freezing on October 15th, 2011

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

“This baby reunion is unique because it celebrates the pioneering families and their babies conceived from thawed frozen eggs. Nearly 70 joyous families and their frozen egg babies will come together to celebrate LIFE at West Coast Fertility Centers on October 15,” states Dr. David Diaz.

The entire staff at West Coast Fertility Centers has been diligently planning the first ever reunion of babies born from frozen eggs. Unlike other regular IVF reunions periodically held by various fertility centers, we are hosting the world’s first reunion of actual babies born from egg freezing. We are all so happy and excited to spend an afternoon with all the beautiful frozen egg babies.

Guest speakers at this world’s first frozen egg reunion event will include…

Barbara, Mother of first frozen egg baby – Cadyn who turned 6 years old on Oct 6th.

Brie, Patient who did egg freezing before starting her cancer treatments

Stephanie and Rob, Chose egg freezing rather than embryo freezing

“David Diaz, MD, Medical Director of Frozen Egg Bank Inc. and West Coast Fertility Centers has always      been on the scientific forefront of finding real solutions for real human needs because he understands that unanticipated life events can threaten a woman’s reproduction. Cancer at a young age, career demands, single marital status, or a depleted ovarian function can all endanger a woman’s fertility potential.

Since 2000, Frozen Egg Bank’s (FEB) medical and scientific team have been refining the art of freezing and thawing a woman’s unfertilized egg for fertilization and implantation at a later date. Long before the “flash freeze” method was in vogue, FEB in association with West Coast Fertility Center, presented their 91% frozen egg survival rate data at the ASRM Meeting in 2008. The team developed an IRB approved study for their digital programmed freezing method that has resulted in the births of nearly 70 healthy babies out of about 400 born in the U.S. from frozen eggs. Cadyn, the Center’s oldest frozen egg baby and the first in California, will celebrate her sixth birthday on October 6, 2011.”

Poteat Triplets’ Visit to West Coast Fertility Centers

Friday, September 9th, 2011

What a heart-warming and delightful afternoon we all had with a surprise visit from the Poteat triplets. They brightened up our day with their beautiful faces and it was just so wonderful to see how happy and healthy they’re all doing. The triplets were accompanied by their adorable older sister.

Plenty of pictures were taken of this precious occasion. Joan, our nurse practitioner, took the triplets to the back office and showed them their family picture hung on our wall.

New Insights from Recent U.S. Fertility Survey

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Interesting Highlights from Survey

-91% of couples would have seen a fertility specialist sooner if they could do it all over again.

-54% of women incorrectly assume that fertility begins to decline at age 36 or older.

-62% of women surveyed believe news stories about celebrities over 40 having babies are good because they give hope.

-76% of potential patients and 71% of current patients are concerned about the number of injections.

-57% of women surveyed receive unsolicited advice from family and friends.

-3 out of 4 couples are concerned about the possibility of multiple births.

In the weeks to come, be on the lookout for comments and explanations regarding this survey from both David Diaz, MD, FACOG (Reproductive Endocrinologist & Fertility Specialist) and Joan Moody, RN, CNP (19 years’ experience with infertility).

Information regarding the survey

Merck recently conducted a survey to gain a deeper understanding of the fertility patient experience. 585 couples were surveyed over a 2 year period. In all cases, the woman (or both the woman and the man) had fertility issues.

All participants surveyed had difficulty getting pregnant in the past 24 months prior to the survey. Of the 585 couples surveyed, there was only one respondent per couple; 259 were women and 326 were men. Women were between ages 18-44 years old whereas the men were between  ages 18-54 years old.

The 4 Crucial Fertility Questions

Monday, August 1st, 2011

The 4 Fertility Questions

1)      Is there an egg?

2)      Is there enough sperm?

3)      Can egg and sperm meet?

4)      Can implantation occur?

Testing can be performed for fertility questions 1 through 3. Testing can be completed in one month.

1) Egg/Ovarian Reserve Testing:

-FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone)

-LH (Luteinizing hormone)

-Estradiol (Estradiol is secreted by developing follicles as they grow and is therefore an excellent measure of ovarian and follicular function)

-TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone)

-AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone)

-Pelvic Ultrasound to determine Resting AFC (Antral follical count) This involves counting the resting follicles that are found on the ovary at the beginning of the menstruation. A high AFC indicates that a woman has a large number of eggs remaining in her ovary whereas low AFC shows that a woman may have a reduced number of eggs and therefore reduced fertility

2) Semen Analysis Testing – Amount of fluid, Sperm count (millions/ml), percentage of sperm motility, speed, shape (morphology)

3) Fallopian Tube Testing Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)- x ray to check if there are blockage in the fallopian tubes. Normal fallopian tubes are critical for egg transport.

“Natural IVF” – An Exciting and Affordable NEW Fertility Treatment Developed by West Coast Fertility Centers

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Dr. David  Diaz and his entire scientific team are always on the cutting edge of technology by developing innovative techniques and methods to treat infertility. The NEW fertility development called “Natural IVF” (NIVF) mimics a natural pregnancy and enhances the way nature selects the best egg for ovulation in a natural cycle.

Natural IVF at West Coast Fertility Center Orange County, CA

What is “Natural IVF” and How Does it Work?

“Natural IVF” can be offered to selected patients who have mild forms of infertility but still need help becoming pregnant. NIVF mimics the natural process by helping the woman’s ovaries produce the natural healthy egg she would produce in her own cycle.

Usually one, but occasionally two eggs are released in natural cycles. With Natural IVF, we help the ovaries select and grow the naturally selected one or two follicles and eggs. The follicles are aspirated under IV sedation and the harvested eggs are replaced to the uterus 3 days later. The woman takes progesterone capsules to help support the uterine lining. A pregnancy is confirmed two weeks after the transfer.

What Are the Advantages of Natural IVF?

Affordability In NIVF cycles we are merely supporting the growth of the naturally selected one or two eggs for the treatment cycle. Medication cost is low because only a minimal of amount is used to encourage the naturally selected one or two eggs.

Less MonitoringFewer ultrasound studies and fewer blood tests are needed because only one or two follicles are expected to develop.

Less Anesthesia Only mild IV sedation is needed for the egg harvest because only one or two follicles will be aspirated taking about 10 minutes.

Less Chance of Multiple Births Only one or two embryos are transferred.

Are You a Candidate for Natural IVF?

Patient selection is critical for someone to have a reasonable chance for success. Therefore, we have developed specific guidelines which must be met before recommending NIVF:

1. Low BMI <32 (body mass index):  Patients struggling with obesity are unlikely to respond due to the metabolic activity of adipose tissue. A BMI <32 is required to qualify for NIVF.

2. Age <33 years old: It is known that patients in their early 30’s have good ovarian reserve and therefore are likely to produce favorable egg quality, essential for embryo development.

3. FSH  <8miu/ml and Estradiol <60pg/ml: These hormones are laboratory indicators of  ovarian reserve and are good markers for predicting response during NIVF.

4. Regular Menstruation every 28-32 days: This pattern of regular cycles suggests normal hormonal signaling between ovaries and the pituitary gland.

5. Ovarian Ultrasound showing normal volume of 3-4 CM³ in each ovary.

6. Sperm Count >20 million/ml; Motility > 40%; Strict Criteria morphology >4%.

7. Absence of any medical condition that would place a patient at high risk for pregnancy.

8. Clomid patients who have undergone 3 or more cycles without success.

To find out if you are a candidate for Natural IVF, our patient care coordinators Joan or Maria will help you undergo testing to determine if you are eligible. Please contact us for more detailed information at 714-513-1399.
