Royal Wedding Prompts a Visit to West Coast Fertility from a Special British Couple

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The upcoming royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has captivated the world and thanks to their nuptial vows, it has also prompted a visit to West Coast Fertility Centers from a special British couple.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Wedding(Window display of Prince William and Kate Middleton at world famous Harrods department store in London)

It started when Gladys attended the on-board welcome cocktail reception as her cruise ship departed from Seattle. Attracted to Gladys at the party, a charming gentleman introduced himself. Unaccustomed to his distinctive British accent, Gladys asked her travel buddy to help understand the nuances of the “king’s English.” The couple eventually married and began their trans-Atlantic life, he living in Britain and she in the U.S.

Although Gladys had children, the couple relished starting a family together but medical tests showed their best chance would be with the help of a fertility specialist. They visited doctors in the U.K. but the couple decided to seek help in “The States.” A friend recommended they visit a clinic in California where they met Dr. David Diaz.  At the clinic, a prompt diagnosis was made and treatment was planned around the couple’s special living arrangements. His semen sample was frozen and stored before work obligations beckoned in England.

Using in-vitro fertilization, the eggs were fertilized with the thawed sperm and healthy embryos developed in five days. To prevent multiple births, the clinic’s protocol is to transfer just two blastocysts. Happily, two weeks later, a positive pregnancy led to tears of joy and hugs all around. The proud Dad shared in the celebration as the image of the embryo was instantly e-mailed to him across the world in the U.K.

While the Royals prepared for their special day, the British government declared a special holiday of two 4-day weekends in honor of The Prince and future Princess. The celebration made it possible for the new parents to visit California where they hosted a wonderful luncheon for the Staff at West Coast Fertility Centers. They surprised the staff with gifts from England – Cadbury chocolate and a pair of commemorative goblets featuring the images of William and Kate. Congratulations to both couples on their memorable occasions!!

National Infertility Awareness Week April 24-30 | “Secret Stigma of Infertility”

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

This is National Infertility Awareness Week® April 24-30

West Coast Fertility Centers is definitely on the bandwagon to support and educate the public about so many courageous people who struggle with infertility. Please read the following warm message from the Founder and Medical Director of West Coast Fertility Centers—David Diaz, MD, FACOG

“The Secret Stigma of Infertility”

Women and men struggling with infertility are surrounded in daily life by physical, emotional and social stressors which are difficult to avoid. The “Secret Stigma” of infertility is compounded by the feelings of isolation and helplessness mixed with guilt and a healthy dose of anxiety.  The reluctance to share such turmoil with even close friends and family is founded on the underlying dread of mythical advice and fear of caustic comments from well-wishers. The medial insurance industry has further trivialized the impact of infertility by categorizing its treatment as “elective” deluding itself to believe anyone would “elect” to be sub-fertile.

After practicing the “secret specialty” of fertility for 22 years, the dreams of aspiring parents continue to drive my goal to help any person who wishes to have a child by providing alternative options they may not have considered. Advances in medical treatments and society’s evolving attitudes toward non-traditional families are embraced at West Coast Fertility Centers.

Easter Wishes | Meet the Adorable Dewhurst Triplets

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Bunnies Hopping and Babies Popping! Here’s wishing you and your family a very Happy Easter from David Diaz, MD and the entire West Coast Fertility Team

Meet the Dewhurst Triplets

We so admire the adorable pictures of the Dewhurst triplets and we thought their cuteness and outfits were so fitting for our Easter story. Seeing their lovely faces made us smile immediately. Our wonderful patients—Francine and Jonathan Dewhurst share their journey and beautiful family with all of us.

Introducing…

Taryn Chase (4 lbs, 9 oz)

Asher Spencer 5 lbs, 11 o z)

Kathryn Samantha (5 lbs, 7 oz)

We first met Francine and Jonathan in 2005. IUI attempts were unsuccessful and in 2007, IVF was performed. Francine was pregnant and gave birth to a healthy boy, Elias William Roger. They wanted to expand their family and after the second round of IVF, they were pregnant with triplets. The triplets, one boy and two girls, were excited to enter the world and arrived six weeks early on December 30, 2010.

Given the early arrival of the triplets, precautionary measures were taken by limiting visitation from family/friends. This Easter weekend will be especially cherished as it is the first, big family gathering since the triplets were born. There are definitely lots to celebrate as the triplets will turn 4 months on April 30th.

Francine describes that the strategy to taking care of triplets is to “tend to the loudest one first.” She breastfeeds all the children making sure they are all healthy and happy.

Elias, the 3 year old older brother is “in love” with the babies and he is the “best little helper,” states Francine.

Congratulations to your adorable family and we wish the Dewhurst family a very happy Easter family gathering!

Understanding Surrogacy—Read Testimonials from Our Patients Who Used Surrogates

Friday, April 8th, 2011

A surrogate mother is the woman who is pregnant with the child and intends to relinquish it after birth. The origin of the word SURROGATE is derived from the Latin word subrŏgare (to substitute), meaning “appointed to act in the place of.” The intended parent(s) is the individual or couple who intends to rear the child after its birth.

There are many forms of surrogacy—traditional, gestational, humanitarian and compensated. Read more about surrogacy by clicking here.

At West Coast Fertility Centers, we have experienced many forms of surrogacy and our valued patients share their stories with you…

“My experience with Dr. Diaz was that of making it very simple to achieve being a parent. At every turn, Dr. Diaz made the procedures effortless and successful. He made it clear on the success percent from historical data and all went to plan.

The staff made me very comfortable and safe with each step, until I was handed off to the pediatrician. Being a single dad is much easier than I expected. I have learned that I have a love inside of me for my son that I never knew could exist, and am happier than I have ever been being a parent.”  -Nick L. (single father)

“My partner and I went to Dr. Diaz after so many hurdles of trying to start a family. Being a gay couple, we decided to try IVF. This was really our last hope after trying with a traditional surrogate for two years and that being unsuccessful.

When we saw Dr. Diaz, he made us feel right at home and comfortable. His staff is amazing and answered all emails and calls right away. We found a surrogate in the OC area and the process for her was simple and Dr. Diaz made sure it was a right fit for us. Within 60 days of meeting Dr. Diaz, we had our first IVF and it was a success. We are now into our second trimester and are extremely happy to bring our baby home in mid 2011.”

Thank you, again, Dr. Diaz and staff for making our family a reality.”  -Mike T. (same sex couple)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was a surrogate for my parents. My overall experience with Dr. Diaz and staff was a pleasant one. They did all they could to make this process as easy and comfortable for me. I have never done this before and I have to admit I was extremely scared, but for my parents, I would have done this 100 times.
What helped me be at ease was the personable service and the way I was treated while undergoing the procedures and visits. I would and have highly recommended Dr. Diaz for IVF treatments and without the help of Dr. Diaz and staff, there would no greater gift than my little brother. Thank you all again!”  -Vanessa G. A Valentine Story: “Love and Hope Triumph Over a Genetic Time Bomb”
Thursday, February 17th, 2011
When it comes to love, no one can know where the heart will lead. In the case of Brian, destiny transported him to the Far East, where he was fated to meet the unexpected love of his life.
Brian was young and full of hope in his career as an English teacher overseas. “I was only going to go to South Korea for a year. That was the plan, at least.” Brian’s journey towards parenthood began with a mysterious blind date in a far away land just before Christmas when thoughts turn to home and family. A lovely young English teacher whom Brian nicknamed “HK” was to be his future bride. It was Brian’s first Christmas away from his family, but “HK was able to put me at ease and we had a wonderful time.” The two young teachers were so taken that their second date was just two days later on Christmas Day.
The young couple looked forward to their careers, Brian as college professor teaching English at a private university and HK teaching English to young students. Love was in the air and a year and a half later they were married. In Brian and HK’s families and in their dreams, having children was a high priority. As Brian and HK explained, “We both wanted children in order to complete our family and every decision we made after was designed to have children.”
Shortly afterwards, HK announced the news that she was pregnant. But then, a strange turn of events unfolded. HK’s pregnancy became complicated and a diagnosis of a genetic illness was diagnosed by doctors and their baby died. Tests were performed and a rare condition known as Sly Syndrome was determined to be the cause. Brian and HK were advised to undergo tests on themselves and then the shocking news came. Each of them was the carrier of an extremely rare genetic disorder which is found in only 1/100,000 human beings. The destiny that brought them together had cruel surprise in store for them.
The transmission of Sly Syndrome is such that a certain percentage of the offspring may be healthy while others may carry the devastating disease. The couple took time to consider their fate and decided to conceive again. Incredibly, four subsequent pregnancies ended in the death of their children, all carrying the fatal disease.
But their devotion and love for each other sustained them in their quest to find an answer to this reproductive nightmare. During a trip to the United States, they met with an OB/GYN doctor who listened carefully to their unfortunate pregnancy outcome. She advised them of her colleague who specialized in helping couples with recurrent pregnancy loss.
Their journey brought them to the reproductive endocrinology specialists at West Coast Fertility Center. The couple met with Dr. David Diaz, the Center’s medical director and fertility specialist with 22 years of experience. Specials tests were performed at the Center’s laboratories to determine that HK could carry a pregnancy. The results were reassuring and attention was focused on the genetic basis of their future.
Advanced studies were performed for the couple and 6 weeks later the results were given. The exact gene sequence responsible for the killer disease had been identified in their DNA. Working closely with collaborators at Genesis Laboratory, plans were made to construct molecular probes that would identify embryos that carried the Sly Syndrome gene.
Dr. Diaz and his team prepared to perform in-vitro fertilization (IVF) for the couple, harvesting HK’s eggs, fertilizing them in the Center’s embryology lab and performing Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) on their embryos. Five days later, two embryos were replaced in HK’s uterus and she returned to Korea.
Two long weeks passed until the pregnancy test was positive!  An OB ultrasound confirmed that one embryo had implanted. The pregnancy continued normally and at long last a long awaited beautiful baby girl named Ella was born in South Korea. She was normal in all respects and the couple’s joy was at last complete. The news arrived at West Coast Fertility by email and the WCFC staff was elated by the news.
Update on Brian, HK and Baby Ella
Because of the special circumstances, the planning for a sibling for their baby began about one year ago. Travel plans and work schedules needed to be well coordinated for their next visit to California. Fortunately, the scientists at WCFC had remaining frozen embryos created during their initial IVF.
The couple is currently in Orange County and anticipating their next embryo transfer with a mixture of cautious optimism. Brian states, “Through their help, we were able to have children. I can’t think of a better Valentine’s present than that. So thank you, West Coast Fertility.”
As explained by Dr. Diaz, “There is nothing more gratifying to my staff and I than to play a role in the creation of these special families. Happy Valentine’s Day to Brian and HK and baby Ella!”
IVF Emotional Support Combined with Scientific Expertise
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010
Dear Dr Diaz & Staff,
It is not often you find a medical practice such as yours – one that is centered on scientific expertise combined with a staff that is filled with empathy and genuine concern for their patients. This combination is few and far between and is what made our experience with West Coast Fertility Centers a very positive one.
This Thanksgiving, we gave thanks to you Dr. Diaz, as well as to Joan, Beth, Maria, Maritza, Mike, Carol, Dr. Han, Antoine, and Mary for giving us the gift of hope, and ultimately, the gift of family. We were always welcomed with warm and comforting words and many times shared in a hug or a good cry (thanks Joan!).
This emotional support is just as important to us patients as the science behind what you do, and you do both exceptionally well. You reminded us that we were not alone in our struggles yet made us feel like we were your only patients. Thank you for sharing in our struggle, our goal, and finally in our great happiness. You are all so wonderful!
First Frozen Egg Baby Celebrates Fifth Birthday
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010
Cadyn is a very special little girl. Although she turned five years old on October 6, 2010, the eggs from which she was conceived were frozen in 2001 at the West Coast Fertility Centers egg freezing program. West Coast Fertility is considered one of the leading Centers in the country specializing in the field of fertility preservation. The Center pioneered a freezing method called the Landa Freezing Technology capable of storing embryos and eggs for young patients with cancer and women who wish to extend their fertile years until they are ready to start a family.
Cadyn’s mom is a business entrepreneur who was busy establishing her career when she decided it was time to start her family. She asked the specialists at West Coast Fertility to thaw the frozen eggs and inseminate them while scientists performed In-vitro Fertilization and observed the embryos as they developed. At just the right time, the embryos were carefully placed into the uterus under ultrasound guidance. Special fertility enhancing hormones were used to prepare the uterine lining to become receptive to the embryos. After two anxious weeks of waiting, the results of the pregnancy test were ready.
Dr. David Diaz phoned the nervous mom and said, “I told Cadyn’s mother that she was about to become a medical pioneer by being one of the few women in the world to become pregnant with frozen eggs. Everyone at the center celebrated in her honor.” The pregnancy began smoothly, but in the last few weeks a dangerous obstetrical condition developed when the placenta was noted to be blocking the birth canal. Fortunately, a cesarean delivery was performed and little Cadyn became the first baby conceived from frozen eggs at West Coast Fertility Centers.
To celebrate this landmark child, the West Coast Staff arranged for a surprise birthday party for Cadyn. A catered lunch was provided and some special guests were invited. A bright and outgoing redhead, Cadyn was presented with a beautiful cake, a princess tiara and a gift certificate to her favorite store. Cadyn even posed with an ultrasound picture of herself when she was just 10 weeks into her mom’s pregnancy. Birthday wishes and lots of hugs were exchanged until mother and daughter wee off to continue the celebration at Disneyland.
Since Cadyn, West Coast has helped 70 patients conceive using the frozen egg technology. The center has a high success rate of 91% egg survival after thawing the frozen eggs. All egg freezing procedures are conducted with patient consent under a special study protocol.
Dr. Diaz and his team of scientists, Antoine La, ELD and Cris Karl, Senior Embryologist, have been invited to present their work in egg freezing at the annual American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) meeting in Denver, Colorado in late October 2010.
