A Win-Win Situation: Apple and Facebook Covering Egg Freezing for Female Employees

egg-freezing-facebook-apple-paying-employees-photoWhat? A generous egg freezing perk from Apple and Facebook will allow women to put their fertility on hold.

When? Facebook added this egg freezing option under their fertility benefits umbrella in January 2014. Apple will start offering egg freezing in January 2015. Over the years, large corporations in the fields of law, finance and consulting have quietly offered egg freezing to their female employees.

Why? 1) These large tech companies want to add more diversity to their workforce which predominantly is held by men. Even though more women are getting into the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, there’s still quite a discrepancy in the gender gap. As of August 2, 2014, the workforce at Apple was 70% male. As of June 25, 2014, the workforce at Facebook was 69% male. PayScale reported that the median age of Facebook employees is 26 whereas the median age at Apple is 33.

2) These large corporations are probably banking on spending less money on hiring and recruiting costs. This extra benefit of egg freezing encourages women to stay with the company longer. Apple stated, “We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families.”

Where? Women should freeze their eggs at the most experienced and successful egg freezing clinic with high success rates in egg freezing and frozen egg births: Frozen Egg Bank, Inc. in Southern California, a division of West Coast Fertility Centers. Fertility and Egg Freezing specialist, Dr. David Diaz expressed, “Facebook and Apple are paving the future in investing in their female employees by paying for their egg freezing procedure. They recognize the importance of this family planning option and they’re taking action to protect the fertility future of their employees.”

How? Facebook will cover up to $20,000 for the egg freezing procedure. The yearly cryopreservation storage fee is $500. View cost of egg freezing at Frozen Egg Bank, Inc.

For most women, $20,000 usually equals 2 rounds of egg freezing. Why does a woman need more than one round of egg freezing you ask? The answer is that it mainly depends on the age of the woman and how many of her eggs can be collected and cryopreserved. Egg quantity and egg quality declines pretty drastically with age. In other words, women are born with a set number of eggs and there’s no such thing as egg replenishment. The more eggs harvested, the better your chances will be because not all eggs will be healthy and viable enough to undergo the freezing and thawing process.
